Beethoven 'Appassionata', 1st mvt: Dame Myra Hess (1945)

Dame Myra Hess in a lunchtime concert at the National Gallery plays the opening movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F minor, Op 57. During the war years, and the blitz, Dame Myra Hess organized over a thousand concerts at the National Gallery. The Gallery had removed all their paintings, keeping just one on display each month as thousands of folks (many not regular concert goers) came to hear, be inspired, and maybe gain a little hope by these wartime concerts. Andrew Dickson wrote in his blog at the "Guardian": "the monumental Appassionata - always associated in my mind with a wartime film of Myra Hess at the National Gallery, playing those crashing F minor chords at with a stubborn intensity that takes on all the death and mayhem around."

Myra Hess plays Brahms Intermezzi and Capriccio

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): 1. Intermezzo in C Major opus 119 no. 3 2. Capriccio in D minor opus 116 no. 7 3. Intermezzo in Ab Major opus 76 no. 3 Recorded in 1941. Myra Hess Born: February 25, 1890 - London, England Died: November 25, 1965 - London, England The Eminent English pianist, Dame Myra Hess, was a pupil of Julian Pascal and Orlando Morgan at the Guildhall School of Music in London. At 12 she earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music and became a pupil of Tobias Matthay, whom she viewed as her primary teacher. Myra Hess made her debut in November 1907, at the age of 17, in Beethoven's Fourth Concerto, with Thomas Beecham conducting in London. The she performed throughout England. In 1922 she made her USA debut in New York. Thereafter she toured widely in Europe and the USA. In 1936 she was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Myra Hess was one of the best-known and most beloved of British pianists. She was a warm person and well liked, particularly in English-speaking countries, and visited America frequently. Her reputation was particularly enhanced by her innovative and deeply appreciated venture during World War II, the National Gallery Concerts. Wartime blackouts closed the concert halls of London. In the meantime, the National Gallery in London had been emptied of its art treasures, which were sent to parts of the country less vulnerable to German bombing. It was Hess's idea to open in 1939 the Gallery to the public for concerts every day during the lunch hours. Londoners flocked to these informal concerts. She arranged concerts from solo recitals to full-scale orchestral and choral music. She personally appeared more than any other artist (never asking for a fee), and got some of the finest musicians of the country to appear there. The effort was seen as a major boost to morale. In 1941 the grateful King George VI made her Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. It is said that when the artworks were returned to the Gallery in 1946, ending the musical series, that there was considerable disappointment. After the War, Myra Hess commenced touring again and continued her notable career until her farewell concert in 1962. In addition to her solo engagements, and in a departure for pianists of her era, she also took a special interest in chamber music, including participating in a piano duo with her cousin Irene Scharrer. In common with many artists Myra Hess adopted a wide-ranging repertory, including much music of her time, when she was younger, but focused increasingly on the great classic masters in later years. She was greatly admired for her interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann. Her playing was noted for both warmth and thoughtfulness. She made numerous transcriptions, of which one in particular, Bach's chorale Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata BWV 147 (published in 1926), has become an international favourite with her audience. Ils sont zazous! - Johnny Hess

1942 The "Zazou" were a current of mode of France of the 1940s. They were young people expressing their individuality by wearing big or garish clothing (similar to the zoot suit fashion in America a few years before) and dancing wildly to swing jazz and bebop. Men wore large lumber jackets, while women wore short skirts, striped stockings and heavy shoes, and often carried umbrellas. During the German occupation of France, the Vichy regime, in collaboration with the Nazis and fascist itself in policies and outlook, had an ultra-conservative morality and started to use a whole range of laws against a youth that was restless and disenchanted. These young people expressed their resistance and nonconformity through aggressive dance competitions, sometimes against soldiers from the occupying forces. The Zazous were to be found throughout France, but were most concentrated in Paris. Vichy had started 'Youth Worksites' in July 1940, in an attempt to indoctrinate French youth. The same year, they set up a Ministry of Youth. They saw the Zazous as a rival and dangerous influence on youth. By 1942, Vichy high-ups realised that the national revival that they hoped would be carried out by young people under their guidance was seriously affected by widespread rejection of the patriotism, work ethic, self-denial, asceticism and masculinity this called for. In 1940, 78 anti-Zazou articles were published in the press, as opposed to nine in 1941 and 38 in 1943. The Vichy papers deplored the moral turpitude and decadence that was affecting French morality. Zazous were seen as work-shy, egotistical and Judeo-Gaullist shirkers. Soon, round-ups began in bars and Zazous were beaten on the street. They became Enemy Number One of the fascist youth organisations, Jeunesse Populaire Française. "Scalp the Zazous!" became their slogan. Squads of young JPF fascists armed with hairclippers attacked Zazous. Many were arrested and sent to the countryside to work on the harvest. At this point the Zazous went underground, holing up in their dance halls and basement clubs. With the Liberation of Paris it appears some Zazous joined in the armed combat to drive out the Nazis -- certainly they had a few scores to settle. But the Zazous were suspected by the official Communist resistance of having an apathetic, even flippant attitude to the war in general. (Wikipedia) First, an extract of "France Actualités" of April, 1944, when Jacques Doriot (French politician prior to and during World War II. He began as a Communist but then turned Fascist.) expresses himself in front of the LVF. He says: "... I want to greet these first pioneers who faced the risks of the fight from 1941, and the even harder rigours of the terrible winter 1941/1942. Thanks to the Legion, France has the possibility of reconstituting the only military force which can be accepted in Europe, because she contributes to the common defence....Does not she know, our youth, that if she does not fight, the youth of Europe which gives its blood to stream onto the east front, will have only been mistaken for her? Be 20 years old, live in the grandest time of the human history and make the "zazou" physically, morally... What a decline, what a decay! " 1r stanza: " The frizzed hair, The collar eighteen feet high, Ah they are zazou! The finger like that in the air The jacket which is dawdles on the ground Ah they are zazou! They have pants of an incredible cutting Which arrive a little in the top of knees And come rain come shine, they have an umbrella, Of big dark glasses, And then especially, They look like disgusted. "
